Does home air conditioning use a lot of electricity?

Electricity use depends on the system efficiency, outdoor temperature, room heat load, set temperature, insulation, glazing and how long the equipment runs.

Last reviewed · October 2026

The rated input is not the whole story

Air conditioning is a heat-pump technology, so electrical input is used to move heat rather than create all of the heating or cooling energy directly. Actual consumption still varies significantly with conditions and use.

How you use it matters

Trying to pull a very hot room down to an extreme set point quickly is different from maintaining a reasonable temperature in a well-controlled space. Shading, insulation and keeping doors or windows closed can all affect load.
