Air conditioning for a garden room

Garden rooms can be difficult to keep comfortable because relatively small spaces often combine a lot of glazing with changing outdoor conditions. A reversible air conditioning system can provide both cooling and heating from one unit.

Why garden rooms overheat

Large windows, rooflights, solar gain and a small internal volume can make the temperature rise quickly on bright days. Blinds, shading and good insulation help, but active cooling may still be useful where the room is used for work, exercise or everyday living.

Heating in colder weather

Reversible split systems can provide warm air as well as cooling, which can make a detached garden room easier to use through more of the year. The actual heating requirement still depends on insulation, glazing and the size of the space.

Plan the outdoor unit too

The indoor unit is only half the installation. Outdoor-unit position, noise, access, pipe routes, drainage and how the equipment looks from the house and garden should be considered before work starts.
