Portable air conditioner for a static caravan: what actually works?

Portable air conditioning can work well in a static caravan, but the result depends heavily on the exhaust route, electrical supply and choosing enough cooling capacity for a lightweight, highly glazed space.

The exhaust hose has to get the heat outside

A portable air conditioner cools the room while rejecting heat through an exhaust hose. That hot air must be discharged outside. If the hose ends inside the caravan, the unit cannot cool the space properly.

Pushing the hose through an open window works as a temporary answer, but large gaps can allow warm outside air back in. A better-sealed window arrangement or an approved dedicated outlet can improve the setup.

A through-wall exhaust can be a cleaner solution

On a static caravan, a dedicated outlet can sometimes sit directly behind the portable unit. That keeps the hose short, reduces clutter and avoids leaving a large window opening around the duct.

This is still an alteration to the caravan exterior, so the park should approve it first. The wall construction also needs to be suitable and the external termination should be properly finished.

Cooling capacity needs more than floor area

Large windows, direct sun and open-plan lounges can make a caravan a harder cooling job than a conventional room of the same size. That is why choosing a unit only from a square-metre chart can be misleading.

We look at the room dimensions alongside glazing, orientation, shade and how the space is used.

Noise and floor space matter in a caravan

Portable units keep the compressor inside the room, so they are more noticeable than a fixed split system. That matters especially in small bedrooms or when the unit is close to seating.

The best position gives the air a clear path through the room without blocking walkways and keeps the exhaust hose as short and straightforward as possible.

Check the electrical load before buying

The air conditioner shares the pitch supply with everything else in the caravan. Kettles, cooking appliances, water heating and other loads can all be running from the same available capacity.

Check the pitch supply rating and the selected unit's electrical input rather than assuming any plug-in air conditioner will be suitable.
