Single split vs multi split air conditioning

A single split typically connects one indoor unit to one outdoor unit. A multi split arrangement connects several indoor units to one outdoor unit.

Last reviewed · October 2026

Single split

Single splits can be straightforward, flexible and useful where one or two independent rooms need conditioning. Each system has its own outdoor unit and controls.

Multi split

Multi split can reduce the number of outdoor units and serve several rooms, but pipe routing, capacity sharing and system design become more involved.

Which is better?

Neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on the property, number of rooms, routes, appearance, redundancy and budget.
